How to understand handloom
Handloom is a production method, not a visual filter. Small irregularities can be clues, but proof comes from traceable product information.
Useful clues—not guarantees
Slight shifts in yarn tension, motif placement or selvedge can reflect hand processes. A perfectly regular saree can still be handwoven, and an irregular surface is not by itself evidence of handloom.
Read the listing like a label
A trustworthy listing should name the fibre, loom type, weaving location, vendor and care method. For silk and zari, the precise composition matters more than broad words such as premium or traditional.
Before you buy, check:
Fibre composition is specific
Loom type is stated directly
Origin is tied to the individual product
Images show body, border, pallu and reverse
Care guidance matches the material
Important: visual inspection cannot certify origin, fibre purity or GI status. Treat provenance as a documented claim that should be supportable by the seller.
